Fort Worth/Arlington: How to dispute Credit Score/Report from TransUnion, Equifax, Experian | James Foley PLLC
When you notice something wrong with your credit report, your first thought may be to conduct a dispute based on what Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion recommends.
But I’m going to let you in on a secret that will save you time, money, and stress: DON’T.
Or at least, not quite yet.
If you’ve noticed a change in your credit score, or you’ve found errors on your credit history, you need to take action immediately, but if you do it their way, it could cost you valuable time. If you’ve been sued for a debt that’s not yours, and think you may be the victim of identity theft, the situation is even more pressing.
Before you dispute your credit report, consult with me, James Foley, PLLC. I’m a lawyer who serves the state of Texas, and can help you with credit reporting act and FCRA representation if you’re located anywhere in the Lone Star State. That means FCRA and credit reporting accuracy legal assistance in Fort Worth, Weatherford, El Paso, Amarillo, Tyler, San Antonio, Houston, Austin, and Waco.
If you haven’t already, review your credit report for free at www.annualcreditreport.com. And then SAVE that information as a PDF, because they may delete it shortly after you review, or continue to update it.
My clients typically make two mistakes when it comes to credit reporting inaccuracies:
1. FAILING TO SAVE DOCUMENTS
If you think you may have been wronged or need to fight allegations of debt default in court, you need cold hard evidence. This can look like any number of things, but you must have something rather than nothing.
If you find credit report inaccuracies in Benbrook, Euless, North Richland Hills, Grand Prairie, or Aledo, and need a lawyer to help represent you, look no further than James Foley, PLLC.
2. DELAYS IN DISPUTE PROCESS
If you send a dispute to your credit reporting agency (Equifax, TransUnion, Experian) and they don’t reply, or continuously request information you can’t locate, you’re wasting valuable time.
There are limitations on defending yourself in court, or taking a case to federal court against a CRA, which is why you need to contact me on day one. Even a week that’s wasted can be the difference between me winning your case, potentially gaining you monetary returns, and not being able to argue a case at all. This goes for courts in Houston, Midland/Odessa, Amarillo, and Galveston too.
How to find credit reporting errors, and know the difference between intentional actions and mistakes:
Are you finding the following on your report?
-Old or re-aged credit profiles
-Credit accounts with inflated balances
-Loans in a name similar to yours that don’t belong to you
-Loans in your name that you never created
Whether or not the above options, or something else like a falsely reported Hard Pull, are intentional or not is beside the point, and you don’t have to figure that out. What you do need to get to the bottom of is whether or not you yourself committed what’s listed.
Once you’re positive that a line of credit or amount is incorrect, start saving everything and gather all the documentation you can muster. You may be the victim of Identity Theft, or you may be the victim of an accidental clerical error. Both can cause damage, and both can require legal assistance.
